The 1965 Indian Welfare Agreement has uniquely impacted Ontario First Nations, creating challenges distinct from other federal policies like Directive 20-1. Since 1978, the Chiefs of Ontario and the Chiefs-in-Assembly have passed 191 resolutions focused on changing laws, policies, and services to ensure better funding and social service self-determination for First Nations.

On October 4th, we honour Sisters in Spirit Day, r

On October 4th, we honour Sisters in Spirit Day, remembering and standing with the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Amnesty International’s No More Stolen Sisters Report—one of the earliest to comprehensively document this crisis and influence the ongoing fight for justice and safety.
Vigils will be held in honour of this day.

First Nations across Canada will decide whether to accept the $47.8-billion agreement to reform on-reserve child welfare systems and stop decades of discrimination against First Nations youth.

“This agreement is a $47.8 billion agreement over 10 years that provides resources directly to the community to reform the child welfare system so that communities are in control of how they are going to be protecting their most valuable resource and that's their children.” said Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict.

“The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a stark reminder of what First Nations children endured at residential schools. These institutions caused unimaginable harm to entire generations of First Nations people that can still be felt today. It is a reality with lasting intergenerational impacts that must never be forgotten.

Though these ‘schools’ shaped the trajectory of First Nations across Canada, today is also a time to recognize and honour the incredible strength of the survivors and their families. Despite widespread, systematic attempts to erase entire cultures, languages and traditions, these ‘schools’ sought to ‘kill the Indian in the child,’ yet they thrive today. Our unique Nations and cultures exist today because survivors of the residential school system fought to keep them alive—often in the face of serious personal harm.

They passed on the traditions, languages and teachings these institutions sought to destroy so that all of us today know who we are, where we come from and how we got here. Their resilience is a testament to the spirit of our people who have fought—and continue to fight—to heal and restore our communities. Reconciliation is an ongoing process. It demands more than words; it requires meaningful action from governments, organizations and society at large. We must listen to and uplift First Nations’ voices, so that our true history is known and understood by all Canadians.”

On September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reco

On September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honor the strength and resilience of survivors, families, and communities affected by residential schools. This day is dedicated to reflecting on our shared history and the lasting impacts of colonialism while uplifting the voices and stories of those who have been impacted.

The Chiefs of Ontario encourage everyone to wear orange to honor Survivors and participate in local events. These gatherings provide an important opportunity to listen, learn, and support First Nations in their healing journeys.

This day goes beyond remembrance, it serves as a call to action for all Canadians to engage in meaningful conversations about our collective history and its ongoing effects. Together, let us commit to taking steps toward reconciliation and fostering a future built on respect, understanding, and collaboration.

Please note that the Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office will be closed on Monday, September 30th, in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We will resume regular office hours on Tuesday, October 1st.

The Chiefs of Ontario will be hosting a Special Ch

The Chiefs of Ontario will be hosting a Special Chiefs Assembly (SCA) on October 10, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 pm. EST in Toronto, Ontario. The SCA will focus on the draft Final Agreement (FA) related to the long-term reforms of the First Nations Child & Family Services (FNCFS) program.

Ontario First Nations Leadership will have the opportunity to learn more about proposed long-term reform and vote on the resolution to consider the approval of the FA. The SCA is open to Chiefs and proxies. To vote, you must be a Chief or a designated proxy

The Chiefs of Ontario’s Research and Data Management Sector has released a research paper analyzing the effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on First Nations in Ontario.

AI is a powerful and disruptive technology. It has a great deal of potential, but this potential comes paired with serious risks for First Nations. This paper lays out the nature of AI technology, the proposed regulations that could govern it, and the consequences of AI for First Nations in Ontario.

With the theme of Gender Equality Week 2024 being Unlocking Potential: Economic Power Through Gender Equality, we recognize the contributions of First Nations women who broke new ground in the pursuit of economic equality. Despite facing significant colonial barriers such as discrimination and exclusion, many became the first in their communities to lead businesses, enter professions in science and education, and advocate for economic rights. Their efforts laid the foundation for future generations of First Nations women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals to pursue economic opportunities.

While their achievements were significant, First Nations women continue to experience challenges such as underrepresentation in leadership roles, wage disparities, and limited economic opportunities, particularly in rural and remote areas.

This week, we acknowledge both the work that needs to be done to eliminate the barriers First Nations women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals continue to face while celebrating the women who made historical economic achievements.
