These institutions caused unimaginable harm to entire generations of First Nations people that can still be felt today. It is a reality with lasting intergenerational impacts that must never be forgotten. Though these ‘schools’ shaped the trajectory of First Nations across Canada, today is also a time to recognize and honour the incredible strength of the survivors and their families. Despite widespread, systematic attempts to erase entire cultures, languages and traditions, these ‘schools’ sought to ‘kill the Indian in the child,’ yet they thrive today. Our unique Nations and cultures exist today because survivors of the residential school system fought to keep them alive—often in the face of serious personal harm. They passed on the traditions, languages and teachings these institutions sought to destroy so that all of us today know who we are, where we come from and how we got here. Their resilience is a testament to the spirit of our people who have fought—and continue to fight—to heal and restore our communities. Reconciliation is an ongoing process. On September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reco On September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honor the strength and resilience of survivors, families, and communities affected by residential schools. This day is dedicated to reflecting on our shared history and the lasting impacts of colonialism while uplifting the voices and stories of those who have been impacted. The Chiefs of Ontario encourage everyone to wear orange to honor Survivors and participate in local events. These gatherings provide an important opportunity to listen, learn, and support First Nations in their healing journeys. This day goes beyond remembrance, it serves as a call to action for all Canadians to engage in meaningful conversations about our collective history and its ongoing effects. Together, let us commit to taking steps toward reconciliation and fostering a future built on respect, understanding, and collaboration. Please note that the Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office will be closed on Monday, September 30th, in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We will resume regular office hours on Tuesday, October 1st.

Ontario First Nations Leadership will have the opportunity to learn more about proposed long-term reform and vote on the resolution to consider the approval of the FA. AI is a powerful and disruptive technology. It has a great deal of potential, but this potential comes paired with serious risks for First Nations. This paper lays out the nature of AI technology, the proposed regulations that could govern it, and the consequences of AI for First Nations in Ontario. With the theme of Gender Equality Week 2024 being With the theme of Gender Equality Week 2024 being Unlocking Potential: Economic Power Through Gender Equality, we recognize the contributions of First Nations women who broke new ground in the pursuit of economic equality. Despite facing significant colonial barriers such as discrimination and exclusion, many became the first in their communities to lead businesses, enter professions in science and education, and advocate for economic rights. Their efforts laid the foundation for future generations of First Nations women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals to pursue economic opportunities. While their achievements were significant, First Nations women continue to experience challenges such as underrepresentation in leadership roles, wage disparities, and limited economic opportunities, particularly in rural and remote areas. This week, we acknowledge both the work that needs to be done to eliminate the barriers First Nations women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse individuals continue to face while celebrating the women who made historical economic achievements.
