- Through partnershipwith OFNHAEC, to quantify the health and economic impact of HCV among First Nations people in Ontario
Background: Rationale and Goal
- An estimated 220,000 Canadians are living with Hepatitis C viral (HCV) infection
- Treatment regimens are highly effective with cure rates exceeding 95%
- 44% are unaware of their diagnosis
- Without treatment, over 41% of those infected may develop liver cirrhosis
- HCV has been described as a colonial illness, with risk factors such as injection drug use, linked to trauma caused by colonial stress
