Trilateral First Nations Health Senior Officials Committee Public Health Working Group Policy Brief on Determinants of Health

The health of a community and individuals within that community is determined first and foremost by their circumstances and environment. These broad factors combine in complex and intricate ways to create an overall picture of a community’s health. Factors such as where people live, the state of their environment, genetics, income and education level, and their relationships with friends and family often have a more substantial impact on health than more traditional indicators of health such as access to health services.
